The Tiny Travel Trend Making a Big Splash

Consider staying in a small home on your next solo trip.

Nontraditional lodging has become an increasingly popular travel trend over the past couple years, and among the quirkiest types are small homes and tiny houses. For the uninitiated, these are actually two distinct categories: A small home ranges from 500 to 1,000 square feet, while a tiny house is under 500 square feet. These are the perfect accommodations if you’re traveling solo or with just one other person, as they’re cheaper than hotels and usually have more amenities than hostels. Check out these unique mini abodes across the U.S. (and one slightly south of the border).

01

ATLANTA, GEORGIA

Even with a limited amount of space, each room in this tiny house in Atlanta has its own identity. There’s a full kitchen and bathroom, a washer and dryer, and two bedrooms with queen-size beds. In addition, the home boasts a private backyard with a fire pit.

02

BOULDER, COLORADO

This off-the-grid 260-square-foot house sits atop a mountain in Boulder, meaning it comes with especially gorgeous views. The area provides a break from the craziness of city life—the house’s host describes it as secluded enough to walk around in the buff.

03

ROSARITO, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

This oceanfront tiny home is minimalist—you stay here specifically for the scenery and proximity to the beach and community. Step onto the private deck for a stunning view of the beach and pier, and easily walk to the best restaurants, clubs, and shops in town.

04

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

Tucked away in Charleston is this tiny farmhouse with a full kitchen and bathroom. A recent guest noted that her family of four enjoyed their stay here—if that many people can make it work, it’ll feel like a mansion for a party of one or two.

05

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

This charming rental has a studio layout, but folding doors and high ceilings make it seem larger than just 448 square feet. Also adding a spacious feel: a large yard, a patio space, and functional furniture—the bookshelf transforms into a Murphy bed.

06

COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA

The downside: This modern home is truly tiny—there’s only enough room for a portable toilet. On the bright side, “The Nugget” offers a stunning mix of mid-century modern and industrial decor, and the beach is just a quick drive away.
