The Perfect Outfit for Every Wedding

Here comes the bride—and her perfectly dressed guests.

Notice how no one is wearing white?

Weddings are the perfect excuse to get dressed up, enjoy a night out with your loved ones, and celebrate the new couple. But what to wear can be tricky—you want to look great while not overshadowing the bride or raising the eyebrows of anyone in attendance. Stylist Charlotte Jenkins shares her tips to make your outfit planning easier, no matter where the nuptials take place.

Traditional Indoor Wedding

Women: Cocktail-chic is the way to go. Keep it classy in a midi or knee-length cocktail dresses in a luxe fabric like lace, satin, or chiffon. This is a great place to wear a statement heel in a bold color to pump up your look, but be sure to leave a pair of flats at coat-check so you can tear up the dance floor later on.

Men: Wear a suit, always—preferably a slick one in gray, navy, or this season’s top color, cobalt blue. Pair it with a crisp shirt and tie combo that suits your personality. To avoid looking corporate, ditch the striped tie and choose a fun print in a rich silk and vibrant color. Paisley, polka dots, and floral ties with a coordinating pocket square will nail that dapper look.

Outdoor Beach Wedding

Women: Opt for a flowy maxi or midi dress that exudes a bohemian beach vibe and won’t malfunction with a gust of wind. Pair with wedges or block-heel sandals so you can trek through the sandy terrain with ease. Romantic pastel colors, floral and vibrant prints, and punchy bold colors will complement the tropical environment. And accessorize smartly: Have a trendy pair of sunglasses on hand and a pretty shawl for cooler nights.

Men: Light-colored suits are the key to staying cool outdoors. Look for linen, cotton, and lightweight fabrics in a variety of pastels, light gray, and tan. Choose a light printed shirt (think floral or botanical prints), go unbuttoned with no tie, and add a coordinating pocket square. Complete your look with a cool pair of shades and suede loafers sans socks.

Black-Tie Wedding

Women: This is your glam moment, so rise to the occasion and go for a gown. Look for floor-skimming dresses in embellished fabrics with beading, sequins in classic black, and bold jewel tone like burgundy, purple, navy, and emerald. Accessorize with a metallic shoe and statement jewelry.

Men: Black tie means formal suits and tuxedos for men. This is your chance to be James Bond for the night! For the traditionalist, a classic black tuxedo and bow tie is a great choice. If you’re a more daring gent, an embellished dinner jacket in brocade or velvet will score you a memorable outfit and loads of compliments.
