Our Milestone Moments with Habitat for Humanity

It’s an honor to work with this life-changing global nonprofit.

Habitat for Humanity has been a part of our lives for two decades, and together we’ve helped countless families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. Over the years, we’ve done builds across the United States and Canada; we’ve remodeled existing homes and completed brand-new builds from the foundation up. And while you’ve probably seen us gleefully destroying old kitchen cabinets on our shows, we also donate appliances, windows, doors, and more to Habitat ReStore. Every single one of our Habitat experiences is special, but these are five of our favorites.

01

DISCOVERING RESTORE

We were first exposed to Habitat in the 1990s, when we were flipping properties and stumbled upon the Habitat ReStore. What an incredible win-win-win concept: Builders donate quality materials to be repurposed elsewhere, we score amazing finds that save us money on our projects, and the proceeds directly benefit people in the community. It didn’t take long for us to begin exploring how to further our relationship with Habitat.

02

ANCHORAGE AWAY!

As a small token of our appreciation, we surprised volunteers at a Habitat build site in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2014. We’ll never forget the shock on their faces (the good kind!) when we showed up. These folks work tirelessly and selflessly to help the families that will live in these homes—often having never even met them. It’s a beautiful reminder of the kindness that exists in the world.

03

A FLOOD OF RELIEF

In August 2016, Louisiana experienced catastrophic flooding—and we happened to be shooting Brothers Take New Orleans at the time, so it literally hit close to home. We partnered with Lowe’s to donate 84 of our Scott Living vanities to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge, and we considered it an honor that they were used in area homes that were being rebuilt.

04

BEING NAMED HABITAT HUMANITARIANS

The prestige of being named Habitat Humanitarians in 2017 is not lost on us. There are only four other people in this club: former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter as well as country music power couple Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. But we still have a lot of work to do! Accepting this honor has only fueled our passion for advocating for affordable shelter around the world.

05

HOME IS THE KEY DEDICATION

In April 2018, we worked alongside volunteers during Habitat’s Home Is the Key campaign, ending the month by dedicating two extra-special houses in Nashville, Tennessee, for single moms Amanda and Ashlee. It didn’t hurt that the event coincided with our 40th birthday, so we were treated to surprise performances from our country music friends RaeLynn and Eric Paslay!
