Shaly & Leonel

Shaly and Leonel moved to Las Vegas ten years ago to open their own insurance agency but were never quite convinced they’d be there forever. Two kids, three business offices, and multiple rentals later, they’re finally ready to admit they’re sticking around and are eager to put down roots. After years of living in boring, beige apartments, the Miami natives were ready to find their dream home—something unique that reflects their personalities, and with a lot of green space for their young children (and to remind them of the lush landscapes of Florida). Additionally, they wanted a single story with open site lines, as well as a dedicated office area since the couple often works from home. Finding a house within their budget was a challenge, but we found a place that, after a lot of demolition work, fit the bill perfectly.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
THE SISTERS

The original kitchen was smack-dab in the center of the home. Its awful placement blocked sunlight and sight lines. We moved it to one side of the house, and our original plans included a large island that contained both seating and all the normal island functions, like a sink and cabinets. Our plans changed though when Shaly and Leonel stopped by in the middle of construction with an idea: instead of one large island, they wanted to do two, smaller islands. “Sisters islands,” explained Shaly. We were definitely not into the idea at first—we thought it would look like aisles at the supermarket—but by the time we finished, we were smitten. Just look at ’em! Perfection!

A DINING ROOM TABLE THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY GET USED

During the aforementioned island discussion, Shaly and Leonel explained to us that while a dining room table was necessary, they didn’t expect to use it—they claimed they’d never eat there, just at the island. But when the couple set eyes on this dining set, they both started walking back their earlier statements. The cane chairs with black finish stand out against the neutral rug, and the table offers stellar backyard views so Mom and Dad can enjoy their morning coffee or a lingering dinner and still keep an eye on the kids as they play outside.

JUST ‘FOOFY’ ENOUGH

Shaly taught us a new word during this episode: ‘foofy,’ which she explains is “A Miami-Cuban word for super fancy.” Our goal was to make their new home a little foofy without overdoing it, and this fireplace feature wall does just that. We knocked out the old, outdated fireplace rock and replaced it with this more modern and elevated look. The surrounding custom built-ins offer plenty of storage, while black shiplap above the charcoal tile mantle keeps things elegant.
