Robin & Louise

Traditional • Rustic-chic • Room to play • Comfortable • Updates galore

Newly single Robin has been living with her parents, but with her three young children running out of room to practice their cheerleading and gymnastics, they’re ready for a place (with space!) of their own. With help from her mom, Louise, Robin finds a fixer-upper nearby and braces herself for the challenges of modernizing a 1960s home. As we checked off each of her must-have features—upgraded fireplaces, a large kitchen island, a mudroom, dedicated spaces for both cheering and adulting—we infused rustic charm throughout. The result is a cheer-filled space fit for kids both big and small.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
HERE’S THE SCOOP

Robin’s finished basement now pulls double duty: Part of it is an open area for the kids to flip, tumble, and jump, and the rest is a colorfully cozy nook for curling up and relaxing. The theme of the entire space is fun, so we introduced lots of bright hues and textures to make it visually appealing. And we totally screamed for this delicious ice cream wallpaper from Rebel Walls—it’s the cherry on top of this playroom, if you will.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

After centering the living room fireplace, we centered our focus on appeasing Robin’s love of both rustic and classic design elements. We carefully selected a glazed porcelain tile with a modern farmhouse feel and used dark grout to add contrast and tie it together with the traditional mantel design. Originally, the surround and mantel were supposed to be off-white, but they accidentally got stained a dark color. Luckily, Robin ended up falling in love with it—so it stayed!

TILE, TAKE TWO!

An important lesson we try to keep in mind is that these renovations aren’t for us—we’re just the guys who get them done. So when Robin balked at the subway tile we had originally chosen for her kitchen backsplash, fearing that it would fall flat, we course-corrected to find her an option that makes her swoon. She showed us pictures of an arabesque tile that had caught her eye; with no time left to place an order, we went out searching for something similar that was in stock locally. We found a beautiful marble version at Home Depot (sadly, it’s no longer on their website)…and everyone lived happily ever after.
