The biggest challenge we faced in renovating Leanne and Jordan’s cottage was adapting it to their drastically different work-from-home styles: She needed a space to write songs and play her guitar; he needed a quiet area to take conference calls. Once we found a solution—creating a dedicated music room and relocating the existing dining room walls to define a small home office—the rest of the reno quickly fell into place. We refinished the original hardwood flooring and stained it a cool, current tone, removed the peninsula area in the kitchen to allow for a full wall of cabinets, and swapped out the master bathroom’s tub for a luxurious shower stall.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
A STANDING ORDER

Because of the office’s size, Jordan needed a desk with a smaller footprint and a minimalistic design. But who said small and minimal has to be boring? We turned to Middle Tennessee’s Rustic River Creations for this custom two-tier piece, which owner Matt Akin built using ebonized and distressed white oak and a beefy 1½-inch metal piping base. Matt told us that he encourages anyone interested in building and DIY to not be afraid to try something new—Leanne, for example, collaborated on the desk’s design and learned how to use a router as well as some other woodworking fundamentals.

A TOP-SHELF SOLUTION

If you’ve ever done any kind of reno, you know that things can (and usually do) throw your budget for a loop. Extra work on this home’s hardwood flooring meant we had to cut costs elsewhere, so we decided to scrap the living room’s planned custom built-ins for a simple freestanding shelving unit. This alternative serves the same purposes—it maximizes the amount of storage and artfully displays books and keepsakes—for a fraction of the cost.

GREEN AND SERENE

The master bathroom’s total upgrade included a larger vanity, patterned floor tile, and this spa-worthy shower. The sage green glass subway tile simultaneously adds interest and tranquility to the space, and it’s the perfect fit for a classic coastal aesthetic. Between the soothing color and the multiple showerhead options, this is one ahhh-mazing place to get clean.
