At 200 years old, this might be the oldest house we’ve ever worked on! Its historic designation prevented us from touching the exterior, but we found plenty of ways to add upgrades inside. We made the biggest splash in the kitchen and living area, which now look extra spacious while staying true to the heritage home’s rustic vibe.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
A KITCHEN COVER-UP

This patterned tile lays over what used to be a window—which you can still see from the outside, as we weren’t allowed to completely remove it—and allowed us to open up the kitchen. A rustic statement backsplash is infinitely more aesthetically pleasing than the bedazzled subway tile it replaced.

ONE-IN-A-MILLION MANTEL

There’s literally no other mantel on earth that looks like this. That’s because it’s a piece of the original 200-year-old beam from between the office and kitchen—we worked with Plank to Table Design to sand and stain it into a work of art. We finished off the fireplace with tile in a charcoal gray to highlight its soaring height.

A CLEVER CORNER

In one corner of the living room, we discovered part of the flooring from the upper level that jutted out and couldn’t be pushed back. We decided to hide this structure in plain sight by turning it into a built-in wood-top desk that can be used as an office/homework nook.
