Irina & Dean

Irina and Dean’s home is a special place, and not just because they had their wedding in the backyard. Even though the house was relatively small, they thought of it as their forever home, because they were told they couldn’t have kids. That’s when the miracle happened: two of them, in fact, in 2-year-old son Matai and two-month-old daughter Adalynn. Now, this amazing family needs more space in a home that’s bursting at the seams with love and people! We re-styled the living room, installed a galley kitchen with more space than you’d expect, and did something we don’t typically do: put up walls, for Adalynn’s nursery.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
FLYING HIGH IN A GALLEY KITCHEN

Galley kitchens don’t get their due: they’re easy to navigate, and work perfectly when you need to move quickly from food prep to cooking dinner for, say, a family of four. We installed some beautiful shaker-style cabinets and a deep pantry so that they actually gained storage. We converted the back window to a door for easy outside access and more natural light, and even salvaged enough brick in the process to complete the reverse conversion from door to window for the adjacent nursery.

NEW BABY, NEW ROOM

A lot of times, we’re clearing out walls and opening up the whole house. This time, we took a little detour, thanks to Irina and Dean’s newest little addition: two-month-old Adalynn, who needed a room of her own. So, instead of taking walls down, we put them up, right where the dining room table used to be. But those walls did double-duty for us, as we were able to turn the other sides into a gallery wall and banquette for the new dining room table, as well as the critical wall for the galley kitchen. And, as a bonus, we were able to take out an uneven floor that was not only a trip hazard, but really harshed the vibes during family dance parties.

CLOSETS, CLOSETS, CLOSETS

That’s all we saw when we opened the front door: so many closets! We took some out and opened up the entrance to the living room, which made the house feel so open that new visitors wouldn’t know we had taken some of the dining space for the new nursery. Instead of jamming all the storage into the middle of the house, we spread storage throughout the home with new shelves in the living room, drawers under the banquette, and a deep pantry in the kitchen.
