Nora & Diego

Jump to a section

Our first-ever episode of Property Brothers: Forever Home had a little bit of everything we love—a tight-knit family, a stunning renovation, and happy surprise for us at the end. (No spoilers here!) Nora and Diego bought their home because it’s large enough to share with Diego’s parents and abuelita, host dinners with extended family, and grow into when they have children. But all that square footage wasn’t being utilized properly. So we swapped the location of the dining room and kitchen, which gave the dining area more space and the kitchen lots of natural light. We also removed the wall separating the living room from the entryway and kitchen, creating one big open space for everyone to gather. Once these structural solutions were in place, we got to work customizing Nora and Diego’s forever home with design features they’ll love for years to come.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
FUN AND FUNCTIONAL

Swapping the location of the dining room and kitchen created a more functional working triangle—that’s the stove, sink, and fridge trifecta—and allowed us to include an island large enough to seat four. Then we had to figure out how to blend Nora and Diego’s love of both color and rustic elements. After much discussion, we chose an earthy green for the cabinets and balanced that standout color with white tile and warm wood tones. Black hardware, plumbing accessories, and lighting bring a touch of modern elegance—and more energy—to this elevated space.

TABLE TALK

Nora and Diego’s family is large, so we were thoughtful in the amount of seating throughout the home. We brought in a handsome live-edge dining table and leather chairs that are soft yet indestructible. We also added a matching bench to the table to squeeze in even more dinner guests; when not in use, it creates a great entry space with custom artwork by local artist Kathleen Lipinski. Finally, we installed a gorgeous modern light fixture to clearly define the space.

WALLPAPER THAT WOWS

The living room needed a total cosmetic overhaul. Since Nora and Diego didn’t need a fireplace, we removed the dated one to allow for more space for entertaining; we also chucked the ’70s-era mirror wall. Then we created a focal point with this feature wall and used it as an opportunity to incorporate even more color—the screen-printed pattern of the Hygge & West wallpaper is the perfect blend of gentle and geometric. And of course we brought in plenty of seating, including two neutral-colored sofas and two side chairs.
