Dereck & Christine

Downtown dwellers Dereck and Christine looked at 90(!) houses before finding this mid-century modern ranch. It came with lots of light, personality, and—partly because it was built in the 1950s—structural issues. Once we fixed those, we turned the chopped-up main floor into an inviting open concept fit for all kinds of gatherings.

Before & After

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
WHERE’S THE FIRE?

The original woodburning fireplace was an enormous structure in the middle of the main floor, and it broke up the sightlines just a little too much. We moved it over to the living room, in order to open up the space, and switched things up with a three-sided electric fireplace that burns bright with character and cool factor.

IN THE CLEAR

Late in the reno game, the homeowners decided to replace their original railing with a tempered glass feature—and now we can’t picture it any other way. The glass enhances the space’s clear sightlines and the continuity between the areas, and it’s also just a nice additional mid-century modern touch.

KITCHEN FOR A KING

If you’re not blinded by those brand-new kitchen appliances, you’ll see that this handsome storage solution comes complete with custom millwork that matches the slope of the ceiling. (This setup allowed us to keep the large window above the kitchen sink.) Now completely open to the dining area, this is the perfect space for cooking and entertaining all at once.
