Actor Rainn Wilson wanted to surprise longtime family friend and nanny, Leslie, with a home makeover. With his patented deadpan humor, deep kindness and alarmingly extensive range of Viking weaponry, Rainn worked with us to completely update Leslie’s home with a new kitchen, living and dining areas, deck and a little something extra outside.

TADELAKT LIKE YOU’VE DONE THIS BEFORE
Leslie’s house was laid out nicely, but needed a lot more natural light and lighter features. To help, we bathed her new fireplace in a Moroccan lime plaster finish known as tadelakt: it’s waterproof, natural and dries 70 percent lighter than when applied. The result was a lovely, classy fireplace that partnered with the surrounding white walls and neutral window treatments.
GIVE A TABLE, GET A TABLE
Leslie was always thinking of others. Case in point: she gave her family’s dining table to another family who needed one, leaving her with a folding table and chairs. We weren’t going to leave her without a dining room table, so we went ahead and gave her a whole new dining room, with more storage and the same hardwood floors we installed throughout the house.
FAWNING OVER AWNING
Leslie’s family enjoyed their outdoor space, but the dated Astroturf and decaying awning needed to be replaced. We installed new composite decking that will last for years to come, and raised the covering for taller guests (ahem, Drew) to provide cool shade as the family watches the kids enjoy their new backyard playhouse.
