Designer Moodboard: Hilton Carter
“Hilton’s design style is so tactile. I want to pick up and move every piece, every plant—get my hands dirty, literally!” —Jonathan
1. Designer Kelly Wearstler is near the top of the list of people Hilton draws inspiration from. “I love how out of the box and free her designs feel,” he says. “The one thing I’ve been a huge fan of since high school is mixed materials, and she is the best at it.”
2. “I’ve been feeling terrazzo for a while now; it’s such a fun material!” admits Hilton. “The pops of color in the stone really make a big presence in any space. It reminds me of confetti sprinkled on the floor—and where there’s confetti, there’s a party.”
3. Hilton used triangle Fireclay Tiles (shown here in 2-by-4 samples) on the floor of his powder room to create a quilt-like pattern. “I chose the Hexite and Triangle shapes knowing it would be the color selection that would pull the design together,” he says. His chosen color scheme: a mix of neutrals and sophisticated shades of rose. “I love the handmade quality of the tile and that each one is a tiny bit different from the next.”
4. When Hilton and his wife bought their new house, they decided to turn the large dining room into the kitchen. “One thing we realized while living in our old apartment was that whenever we’d have parties, everyone would hang out in the kitchen. So we wanted to make sure we had plenty of space,” he says. They used red maple for the custom cabinets, floors, and slatted hood, and a concrete island for a style that Hilton calls Scandinavian/Mexican.
5. “I wanted to start with a blank canvas in our new space, so going with the color Pure White felt right,” Hilton says. “For the exterior colors, I went with Basil for the shutters, door, and trim, and Greek White for the stucco. Both are warm colors that make our home feel more inviting and bright.”
6. “Each print is full of drama,” Hilton says of these House of Hackney wallpapers. “They all make a statement—from big floral prints to mystical landscapes, it’s just an explosion of dopeness!”

Hilton Carter (@hiltoncarter) is one of the OG “plantfluencers.” Not only is the Baltimore-based multi-hyphenate a plant and interiors stylist, he has had a collab with Target, has authored three books (Wild at Home, Wild Interiors, and Wild Creations), has his own line of propagating accessories (available at thingsbyhc.com), and is co-owner of a newly opened plant shop called Green Neighbor. While his huge following (over 500K!) may have come for the plants, they’ve grown alongside him as he’s reno’d his home and taken on the most impressive role yet—being a dad!
