Ask A Brother: Gloss Over

A glossy finish can add an unexpected feeling of airiness to smaller spaces.

Q: I’d love to experiment with high-gloss paint, but I’m nervous! Any tips on the types of spaces this finish would work well in, or shades that look particularly good glossy?

High-gloss paint will add shine to a small space, but like a rich dessert, it’s best savored in small doses. It looks better on woodwork than on drywall. If you want a front or back door to really pop with a strong color, a high-gloss paint does the trick—just make sure you’ve sanded it down well. High-gloss paint is also a good choice for rooms with lots of moisture, like bathrooms. As long as you put in the prep work, you’ll see the results reflected back at you!
